🤫 The Secret to Being Successful in Business 🤫

Hey, it's Rachel—

I have a friend who is a real estate investor.

He has experience flipping homes.

One day, I asked him, "What does it take to be successful? Do you have to time the market just right?"

He told me, "It didn't matter what the market is doing; it's all about the deal."

"If you get a good deal, it doesn't matter if the economy is good or bad; you'll make money."

That lesson has always stuck with me.

In my (currently failing) quest for a bigger home, I come across a lot of homes that are just plain ugly. 😬

Most of them are fixer-uppers, and in my area, even the fixer-uppers have starting prices over $1,000,000. 🤕

But check this out:

This home sold for $1,045,000 in January this year, and then someone flipped it and sold it for $1,460,000 in May!

I did some online sleuthing and found the investor and chatted with him for a while today.

He shared with me that they put around $200,000 into the project.

After renovations, fees, closing costs, and mortgage payments, they probably walked away with at least $100,000. Not bad for 4 months of work.

They were able to take something no one else wanted and turn it into a gem that people wanted and were willing to pay a premium for.

That's great business.

Sometimes, you just have to have vision and turn a problem into an opportunity.

Q: What is your number 1 specific piece of advice for growing a business?

A: This is a great question.

My number one piece of advice is to create something that people want/need and are willing to pay for.

There's a lot of misinformation on the internet about following your passions in business.

While I think your passions and strengths can and should inspire your business, it's important to find the overlap between what you enjoy and are good at AND what the world wants and needs.

If you do something you know will make money but that you don't like, you may be unhappy running and growing your business.

But if you just do something you love without thinking about your customer's wants and needs, you may not make money.

The secret is to find the overlap. Sometimes, it's helpful to ask yourself, "What do I love to do that other people hate doing?"

Also, it's helpful if you find a niche where there's a good amount of existing demand and not a ton of competition.

How do you get that data?

Google Trends, Pinterest Trends, and Ubersuggest can help you assess search volume (aka demand).

And a simple Google search can help you assess the competition.

So, how do you grow a profitable business?

Leverage your unique strengths to create something that's in demand that people want, need, and are willing to pay for.

Hey, it's Rachel— I've always been fascinated with people's dreams of winning the lottery and becoming rich. Did you know: The odds of winning the lottery are one in 300 million. 50% of Americans buy lottery tickets each year. 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. The average American has a 3% chance of becoming a millionaire. What is equally fascinating to me is that so many people leave such a big dream up to chance. Why not just make it happen? While building wealth can be complex,...

Hey, it's Rachel— Do you have a love hate relationship with your phone? You know, sometimes you think it's the best thing ever and it makes your life easier? But sometimes it gets in the way, makes you feel overwhelmed and overstimulated? If this sounds like you, you're not alone. Did you know Gartner (a major research and consulting firm) predicts that by 2025, 50% of people will have either abandoned social media or decreased their usage substantially? And searches for "dumb phones" and app...

Hey, it's Rachel— I was reading You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb this week, and a specific quote cracked me up and reminded me of an important lesson we all should remember: "If the queen had balls, she'd be the king." This saying is essentially a blunt way of saying that thinking about what could be if things were different is futile. From a psychological perspective, this phrase highlights our human tendency to imagine alternate realities or what might have been if things were...
